Drivetrain Overhaul

For a while now there's been a slight crunching, grinding noise coming from the offside area when driving along, nothing too bad just one of those noises that leads you to think there's something not quite right that will need fixing someday. However when the car started pulling to the left while driving and then pulling sharply to the right when braking recently, I concluded that 'someday' had finally arrived.

Apart from the pot joints, I decided to take the whole drivetrain out along with the brake calipers to see what was going on and hopefully learn a few things along the way.

Working when I was able with an hour here and an hour there the overhaul took about 3 weeks in total to complete, starting on July 11th and going on until August 2nd. So to avoid a gigantic singular post, I split the work up into 7 different pages that detail each area.

Enjoy...

Drivetrain Overhaul - (Part 1) - Nearside Removal
Friday, July 11, 2014

Nervously I start pulling the car to bits on the passenger or nearside, wondering if this is a good idea. Anyway, things went quite well...

Drivetrain Overhaul - (Part 2) - Offside Removal

Day two and yesterdays experience has given me more confidence, however a minor slip up did leave me scratching my head...

Drivetrain Overhaul - (Part 3) - Swivel Hub Inspection

Apart from being filthy, the swivel hubs were in excellent condition with very good roller bearings, alas the ball joints had seen better days...

Drivetrain Overhaul - (Part 4) - Brake Caliper Inspection
Friday, July 18, 2014

Stripping and rebuilding the calipers didn't go exactly as planned, but I did learn a valuable lesson though when it comes to pistons...

Drivetrain Overhaul - (Part 5) - Driveshaft and CV Joint Overhaul
Saturday, July 19, 2014

Separating the CV joints from the driveshaft was a learning experience with an unexpectedly pleasant outcome saving a few pennies...

Drivetrain Overhaul - (Part 6) - Swivel Hubs, Bearings and Balljoints
Saturday, July 26, 2014

Finally after many hours cleaning and painting, the swivel hubs are rebuilt with a selection of parts both old and new...

Drivetrain Overhaul - (Part 7) - Final Assembly
Sunday, July 27, 2014

At long last all the hard work pays off as the car is finally put back together, well almost as we fall at the last hurdle...

One Problem, Two Symptoms, Three Weeks
If you just skipped down the titles and read the summaries (I can't blame you as I would probably do the same) you don't really get a sense of the amount of work that went in to make the transformation possible, but believe me, there was loads of it and very enjoyable work it was to.

So go on, scroll back up and read all about the triumphs and the disasters that were encountered along the way and watch how we get from this ...

to this...
