Front Arches

Having examined the pictures from the front wheel arches, it is obvious that there is some rust up in the corners. A little research revealed that this is a very common place to go. Also the seams around the front lights are showing signs of corrosion.

Head Lamp Conversion

One of the front headlamps has been getting dimmer recently. As the Mini has rather large and old fashioned 'Lucas' headlamp units, I decided, rather than replace the unit, to have them converted over to take modern brighter halogen bulbs.

As I was pushed for time and wanted to keep the car on the road. I had the car into 'Inspect A Car' where Huw could get on and complete the work much faster than myself.

While it was in, Huw also stripped and set the rear brakes and adjusted the handbrake.

Underside Inspection

Had the car up on the ramps to inspect and photographed the underside.

There are a few areas that need immediate attention, the front wheel arched are one for sure to tackle first, but overall, it's not too bad.

Rear Arches

Looking under the rear arches, I could see that there were a few stone chips, on close inspection, some where down to the metal and I was worried that it would lead to corrosion. With this in mind, I thought I would go over the insides of the arches with a stone chip product in the hope it would keep the tin worm at bay.

Rear Seatbelts

Never really considered that there would  not be any seatbelts in the rear, but they were optional back in 1987 and would you believe it, whoever bought this car, opted not to have them fitted.

Having two small children, this is something of a problem as we bought the car for fun family days out. While it is perfectly legal to have the kids sitting in the back unstrapped, It is just not a risk worth taking.

Inner Bonnet Release

Was a bit worried about the fact the the bonnet release was on the front and anyone could help themselves to the engine bay. Had a look on Ebay and bought an Inner Bonnet release kit.

Repair hole in drivers side floor

Great! Found a hole on the drivers side of the car in the floor pan where the back foot of the seat meets the floor. Looking at the hole, it looks like someone had attempted a fix in the past, but to be honest, it was a fairly poor effort.

As I don't have a welder, I had to get my good friend Hue at 'Inspect A Car' to do the work. It is always handy to have a good relationship with a local mechanic you trust.

Passenger Sill

Looking at the passenger sill, I decided to have a go at repainting it to tidy it up a little. I sanded the old paint back and applied some Hammerite Rust Beater. Big mistake, as many people already know, Hammerite and rattle can paint do not go well together. The reacting is instant and very severe.

Repainted the worst of the allow wheels

Inspecting the allow wheel, it was obvious that one was far worse that the others. In fact 2 were pretty bad. I decided to strip one of the wheels and repaint it. The stripping turned out to be a very laborious job as there was a plastic coating that needed to be removed and the paint stripper was only marginally effective on it.

Bought the Mini

Bought the Mini from Nationwide Cars Sales in Liverpool on 31 August 2012. Took the kids over to Liverpool to have a look and we were all hooked as soon as we saw it. There was a few bits here and there that were of concern, but I was not thinking logically, and bought the thing even though my brain was saying 'What are you doing!!!!'.
